FBC Viburnum Identity

First Baptist Church Viburnum Identity

Our Identity is what defines us. We at First Baptist Church Viburnum believe that what should define us is our relationship with Jesus. So because of that there isn’t anything we do not relate back to Christ.

Doctrine & Belief

We firmly believe that the Bible is God’s Word. Written by human hands under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and is completely without error and authoritative in our lives. Therefore, the Scriptures have God as its author and salvation and redemption through Jesus Christ as its end with no mixture of error. All of Scripture, Old and New Testament, point to Christ and how humanity can be reconciled to God.

We as a church firmly believe all the doctrines and affirmations made in the 2000 Baptist Faith and Message. We would encourage you to use the link above and read through those affirmations.

Because of the doctrines and affirmations made above, we as a church adopted the following strategy for ministry:

Because we believe the Scriptures are true and authoritative in our lives, we recognize the need for individuals to know and understand the “Truth” in following ways:

  1. Corporately – As a church, as a group, as an organization, we must know and understand the Truth. The following three areas of our corporate ministry are how we have committed to knowing and understanding the “Truth”.
    1. Teaching – Our Sunday Schools, our Children’s Ministry, our Youth Ministry, our Men’s Ministry, our Woman’s Ministry, our Discipleship Ministry, all must be founded in the truth.

      1. (John 8:31-32 ESV)  So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
    2. Worship – every song we sing we sing because it shares the truth of who God is; His character, His power, His saving grace. We worship from a heart that has been transformed by the truth. We worship in song by praising but we also worship by giving, serving, and ministering.
    3. Preaching – the Church must be a place that preaches unapologetically the truth of Jesus Christ.
      1. (John 14:1-6 ESV)  “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

The truth you find in the pages of scripture is the message of Jesus Christ. His life, death, burial, and resurrection that conquered your sin and mine to accomplish what only a perfect and Holy God could accomplish. This is what we preach from the pulpit every week. You may be thinking isn’t there more to your preaching? We would answer with a resounding NO. Everything else is simply relating and applying this truth to every area of your life.
  2. Personally – We believe this does not happen by accident so following three areas are how we have committed to personally know and understand the “Truth”.
    1. Individually – We believe that each person is responsible for knowing and understanding the truth. Therefore we must read and study the scriptures for ourselves. This does not happen by accident but instead through developing a personal habit of regular study of God’s Word. We are committed to helping individuals establish this habit and firmly believe this to be foundational to the growth of any Christian.
    2. Marriage - We believe the downfall of the institution of marriage is directly related to lack of absorption of God’s Word in the lives of husbands and wives. Therefore, we are committed to helping couples know and understand God’s truth and how it should affect their marriage relationship.
      1. (Ephesians 5:25-26 ESV)  Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word.
    3. Family – We believe it is of paramount importance that our families be saturated with the word of God. It is only through the Word that parents have the tools for raising children into Godly adults. We recognize that parenting isn’t easy. That is why we are committed to helping moms and dads make their homes a place where children can come to know and understand the things of God through Bible study, prayer, and discipline.
      1. (Deuteronomy 6:4-9 ESV) “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
    4. Your family desperately needs the truth each and every day so let us help you make it the foundation of your family.

We believe that once we have established God’s Word as the authoritative truth for our lives, the next logical step is growth. 1 Corinthians 13:11 reminds us that “When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.”  So our plan for growth is as follows:

  1. The Basics – Jesus Christ is the foundation and if you have never placed your trust and hope in him I pray you do that today, because he loves you and died for your sins and mine so that we might have eternal life with him in heaven.
    1. We start with Jesus and we are committed to introducing these basics during but not limited too:
      • Sunday School
      • Various gender focus and age specific Discipleship programs; i.e. Men’s Ministry, Woman’s Ministry, Youth Ministry, Children’s Ministry.
      • Sunday Morning Worship
      • Vacation Bible School
      • Etc…
  2. Deeper – We recognize that another role of the church is to “equip the Saints for every good work”, therefore we are committed to offering to all an opportunity to grow deeper in their faith and knowledge of God.
    1. Opportunities for deeper growth can be found at during but not limited too:
      • Sunday Morning Worship
      • Sunday evening Bible study/Discipleship training
      • Wednesday evening prayer/Discipleship training
      • Wednesday evening Youth Group meetings & Special events
      • Sunday School
      • Individual discipleship/mentoring
      • Biblical Counseling
  3. Practice – all will agree that unless you practice your skills you will never grow to proficiency. Therefore, we are committed to providing opportunities for individuals to practice the skills needed to grow in their faith.
    1. Some of these opportunities for practice are but are not limited too:
      • Resources for family/home devotions
      • Resources Personal devotions
      • Biblical Counseling
      • Leading or facilitating small group studies
      • Mentoring
      • Evangelism
      • Missions

We believe that the Scriptures require us to give. Not just of our money and resources but also of our time and talents, not from reluctance but from a cheerful heart, and not for our own glory but for the Glory of God.

  1. (2 Corinthians 9:6-15 ESV)  The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written, “He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission that comes from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!

We stand with the scriptures in affirming that God is the one who has graciously given us all things. Since nothing is really ours we are but stewards or managers of his gracious gifts and so we must be responsible and not greedy.

What do we Give?

  1. Our resources to the ministry of the Gospel
    1. Money, food, clothing, and material possessions
  2. Our services to the ministry of the Gospel
    1. Teaching, hospitality, mentoring, missions, serving, and talents.

Missions and service is at the heart of the ministry at FBC Viburnum. We believe that God has called every believer to be about the business of sharing the Gospel. We firmly believe that God is the only one who can change hearts but we recognize our part to be the hands, feet, and mouthpiece of the message of the Gospel to the world.

  1. (Acts 1:8) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
  2. (Matthew 28:19-20) Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
  3. (Romans 10:14-15) How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

We believe that church membership is important to life and growth of a believer. We also believe that those who have been transformed by the Gospel should devote themselves to the work of the church, which is, bringing honor and glory to God. In the context of the local church, God’s people have the opportunity and responsibility to employ their God-given gifts in His service in relation to one another and to the world.

The membership of this church shall be composed of all persons who have publicly professed Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior and having been accepted by the vote of the church, experience full fellowship of the church in one of the following ways:

The church recognizes as part of its mission and ministry the right to exercise discipline towards its members. The church recognizes that individuals voluntarily decide to become members of this body in response to the leadership of the Holy Spirit. The guidelines of Matthew 18:15-20 will be followed in the matter of church discipline. The church recognizes its responsibility to terminate someone's membership in this body upon the recommendation of the pastor and/or the unanimous recommendation of the deacons and upon the vote of the congregation in a regular monthly church business meeting. Someone's membership in this body may also be terminated at their own request as acted upon in a regular monthly church business meeting.

We are part of The Southern Baptist Convention nationally, The Missouri Baptist Convention of our state, and The Mineral Area Baptist Association locally. We believe that these affiliations are the best means we have to work together and partner with others churches to accomplish God’s mission all over the world, state, and our local communities.
